If you're planning to tie the knot in Hawaiʻi, congratulations! Few places in the world offer such breathtaking beauty and deep cultural significance for your special day. The islands and their mana truly set the stage for a memorable and meaningful ceremony.
Before you say “I do”, there are a few legal steps to complete. Thankfully, the process of obtaining a marriage license in Hawaiʻi is simple and stress-free. In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know so you can focus on what really matters—celebrating your love and commitment.
1. Submit a Hawaiʻi Marriage License Application
Start by filling out the online application form here:👉 https://emrs.ehawaii.gov/emrs/public/home.html
The application takes about 5 minutes to complete. You'll need to pay $65 total ($60 for the marriage license and a $5 application fee). Once submitted, you’ll receive a confirmation to bring to your in-person appointment.
2. Schedule an Appointment with a Licensed Agent
After completing the online application, you’ll need to meet in-person with a marriage license agent on Kauaʻi (or the island where your ceremony will take place). Bring valid photo identification (such as a driver's license or passport).
You can find a list of current agents here:👉 https://health.hawaii.gov/vitalrecords/marriage-licenses/license-agents/
Reach out to an agent ahead of time to schedule your appointment. At that meeting, you’ll finalize and receive your physical marriage license (~30 minute meeting). Most agents are very accommodating and can be available 7 days a week during business hours.
3. Bring the License to Your Ceremony
You must bring your physical marriage license to your ceremony. As your officiant, I will sign and submit it after the ceremony to make your marriage official in the eyes of the state.
Final Thoughts
In the end, filing for your Hawaiʻi marriage license is refreshingly simple—welcoming couples from all corners of the globe, regardless of background or belief. While these steps make it official in the eyes of the law, it is the ceremony you craft together that truly binds your hearts. When planning your big day, let it truly reflect your shared values and vision of the future.
